Activist Marcocchio Sued By Ex-NL Premier, Mining Company

Sydney environmental activist Bruno Marchoccio is among three parties being sued by former Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams and the mining company Alderon. The suit alleges that Marchocchio made defamatory statements when speaking on a radio program regarding the persons behind the Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Project. Marchocchio has often spoken against the $6.2 billion project on behalf of the Sierra Club of Canada, which was one of several groups that launched a court action in March that calls for the project to be halted. The project aims to bring hydroelectricity from Newfoundland and Labrador to the Maritimes, but Marcocchio and other environmentalists say that the project’s alleged negative environmental effects haven’t been given due consideration by Ottawa or by the governments of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
