The Summer Fun Van is out again this year with activities that include everything from Giant board games, crazy games, sports, nature hikes and crafts. Every Friday is Hot dog Day at Petersfield Park. Bring your sneakers, water and sunscreen. The Fun van is free, Hot dog days are $2 and the Day Camps are $5.00. Friday July 30th is Hot Dog Day at Petersfieild Park from 10am to 1pm, the cost is $2 per person. Monday August 2nd the Fun Van will be at Mountainview Elementary from 10am to noon and Skyway Park in Westmount from 1pm to 3pm, Tuesday August 3rd join the Van at Sydney River Elementary from 10am to noon and at Ridgevale from 1pm to 3pm. Wednesday August 4th the Van will be at Cantley Village from 10am to noon and at Sydney Forks Rec Centre from 1pm to 3pm. Thursday August 5th meet the Fun Van at Robin Foote Elementary from 10am to noon and at Coxheath Elementary from 1pm to 3pm. Friday August 6th is Hotdog Day at Petersfield Park from 10am to 1pm. The final event for the Fun Van will be a Bike Day on Wednesday August 11th at Coxheath Recreation Park form 10:30am to 1:30pm.
July 30th
In conjunction with the “Destination Jungle” Summer Reading Program the McConnell Library will be holding a free film night on Friday July 30th at 7pm. They will be showing “Jane goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees”. The film takes you on an extraordinary trip into the 40 years of Dr. Godall’s research into the world of the chimpanzee. No registration is necessary. Everyone is welcome.
Louisbourg Crabfest will take place on Friday July 30th and Saturday July 31st at the Louisbourg waterfront. Friday July 30th the gates open at 7:30pm, mussels are $4.00 a plate while quantities last. Entertainment features Clockwork from 7:30pm to 9:30pm and Kintyre from 10pm to 1am. Saturday July 31st the gates open at noon. The Crab dinners are $10.00 a plate while quantities last. Entertainment will feature Scott Phillips and Friends, Jason MacDonald Band and Gone Country from 12 noon to 7:30pm, Tempted from 8pmt o 10pm and Bobby Currie Band from 10:30pm to 1:30am.
July 31st
Riverview High School will hold a Reunion Dance on Saturday July 31st at Big Pond Fire Hall from 9pm to 1am featuring 70s and 80s music. Cash bar available. Admission is $10 per person with all proceeds going to the Riverview Scholarship Fund. Hosted by the classes of ’76 to ’81 and open to all grads and friends. 20+ cyclists are travelling from the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax on an awareness campaign through the Maritimes. Cyclists and support crew of physicians and advocates will be holding information sessions at hospital along the way in the hopes of bringing some awareness to pancreatic cancer. All are welcome to attend these information sessions and cycle with the cyclists. The cyclists will be at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday July 31st from 4pm to 6pm. The annual family picnic at St. Margaret Community Hall in Grand Mira South will take place on Saturday July 31st from 12 noon to 6pm. The picnic will feature our famous roast beef dinner, bingo, bake sale, silent auction, dunk tank, children’s games and more. Everyone is welcome.
A large yard sale will take place on Saturday July 31st at Elliott’s on McKeen St. in Glace Bay from 8am to 12:30pm. If you would like to donate items for the sale they can be dropped off up to 5pm today July 29th. Furniture will be accepted. A two day open air painting event will take place Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st in Louisbourg. This event gives artists the unique chance to paint the Fortress of Louisbourg, the town of Louisbourg or the nearby coastline. Visitors will have a chance to walk amoung and meet the artists as they paint. The painting will be hung for display and sale in silent auction style at the Fortress Visitor Centre. August 1st
A community scholarship fundraising event by the McLellan Family to raise money for scholarships at Riverview High School is ongoing. The scholarship is in memory of JJ McLellan who died in a motorcycle accident. Tickets are being sold on the yearly “Cow Flop” also known as Bessie’s Lottery. A field is divided into a grid and tickets are sold representing one square on the grid. The winning ticket will be determined by where the cow decides to do her “business” with the winner receiving half of the tickets sales. The Cow Flop takes place on Sunday August 1st at 2pm at McGuire Field, Upper Prince St. There will be a BBQ, face painting and much more. Tickets are $5.00. Call 539-5876 or 562-5518 to purchase.
Citizens Service League, Glace Bay has a new project called “Back Pack Project”. Donations of backpacks and school supplies for both elementary and high school students are being accepted. Supplies can be dropped off at Town House, 150 Commercial St. Glace Bay during regular office hours Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4pm. Families who need assistance to help get their children ready for school in the fall can apply for assistance by calling the Town House office at 849-2449 after August 1st.
August 4th
The CBRM Red Cross Society Swim Program will be held in various locations throughout the CBRM this summer on the following dates; July 12th to July 30th in East Bay, Marion Bridge and Catalone and from August 4th to August 24th at the Mira Boat Club. The programs will take place Monday to Friday. Registration fees are $30 per participant and a family rate of $75 per family. Please call 563-5510 for more information.
August 5th
Town House in Glace Bay will hold a BBQ fundraiser on Thursday August 5th from 11am to 2pm on the front lawn of Town House, 150 Commercial St. While you are there stop in and have a look around the Indoor Yard Sale.
August 8th
Sacred Heart Parish in Johnstown will be holding their 150th Anniversary on Sunday August 8th starting at 10am with a Mass followed by a lunch at 1130am in the parish hall. There will be an Open House from 2pmto 4pm visitors are invited to tour the Shrine, Chapel and Tepyak Trail. A kitchen party will begin at 4pm in the parish hall and a hotdog roast and bonfire will take place on the Johnstown Co-op property with fireworks at dusk.
Cape Breton Antique & Custom Car Club will hold a community cruise on Sunday August 8th. Set up will take place from 11am to noon at the Mayflower Mall, at noon the participants will make their way to Sterling Mall in Glace Bay where they will be until 1:15pm. At 1:45pm they will proceed to Colliery Lands Park in New Waterford. They will continue on to Prince St. Plaza until 3:45pm tour through Sydney Mines from 4:30pm to 5:15pm and finish at North Sydney Mall. A Ham and Scallop Potatoes and Dessert Supper will be held on Saturday August 14th from 4pm to 6pm at Framboise Hall. Eat in or take out available. Tickets are $9.00 per plate and available from members of Heather Lodge or at the door.

A benefit dance for Frances Mason will be held on Saturday August 14th from 9pm to 1am at the Whitney Pier Legion. Proceeds will go towards the medical expenses and efforts to get Frances back to Canada for medical treatment of a brain stroke he suffered in June. August 15th
Baddeck Legion will be holding an “Anything That Floats (but not a boat) Race” on Sunday August 15th. Start building your craft now, no motors allowed. Registration is at 1pm on the day of the race $10 per person or $30 for a team of 4. Winner receives half the proceeds and the other half goes to the Baddeck Lions Kidstone Island Project. Race begins at 2pm with a BBQ and music to follow.

The Maritime Centre for African Dance is hosting an exciting Afro Dance Summer Camp for children and youth ages 8 to 20 at Camp Kana’da in Musquodoboit NS from Aug 16th to August 20th. The United Ostomy Association of Canada is holding its National Conference, hosted by the Cape Breton Chapter at the Delta Hotel in Sydney from Thursday August 19th to Saturday August 21st. This conference will be for ostomates and their caregivers who wish to learn about the latest information on living and dealing with ostomy surgery. McConnell Library C@P site in Sydney is offering Nintendo Wii programs for seniors throughout the summer. This program is free and is an exciting way to get some exercise and have some fun. Some of the activities offered on the Wii are bowling, tennis, golf, baseball and more. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of Wii just a bit of energy and enthusiasm. Town House in Glace Bay will be holding its weekly Summer Camps again this year from July 5th to August 23rd. The camps take place from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm at Passchendaele House on Dominion St. Register for one or more weeks at a cost of $75.00 a week per child and $60 a week for each additional child. The Glace Bay Heritage Museum located in the Old Town Hall is starting it’s Summer Hours. The Museum will be open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. Come and visit the newly opened second floor with exhibits pertaining to sports, entertainment and Glace Bay’s businesses and the history of labour in the area.

The C@P site at the YMCA in Glace Bay will be offering Free Senior Computer classes this summer from 12 noon to 2pm Monday to Friday. The site also is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday to anyone wishing to use the site or to have one-on-one training with the Youth Intern. A free summer Cyber Camp for kids is in the planning stages for July 6th to July 9th Tuesday to Friday from 10am to noon. Town House Glace Bay offers a Brunch With Us program to several local seniors complexes. It consists of a free brunch and activities or entertainment to the seniors and offered once a month for each location. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the meals and to help serve and tidy up when brunch is over. The Victorian Order of Nurses has volunteer positions available in its new VON Adult Day Program. Also needed are volunteers to help obtain donations of articles for the program and volunteer drivers for picking up supplies or other materials.
